Scaling translation operations in Wagtail-Localize
Wagtail Localize helps manage the translation process for Wagtail pages. This talk is based on my GSoC 2026 project, "Scaling translation operations in Wagtail-Localize."
The talk follows this order:
- A short introduction to what Wagtail Localize does and why scalability matters
- A benchmarking harness I built to measure query counts across the translation flow
- One concrete case: an N+1 query problem found while building the page index used during tree sync, explained in simple terms and how it showed up there specifically
- The actual results: query counts before and after the fix
My approach throughout the project was to measure before optimizing: build a way to see the real cost of an operation, confirm a problem with evidence, then fix it and measure again to confirm the fix worked.
Attendees will leave with a concrete example of an N+1 query problem in a real Wagtail project, and a simple, repeatable way to think about measuring performance before optimizing in their own Django or Wagtail projects.
