This is a graph showing wagtail stars accumulated on GitHub overtime. The X axis is the number of stars and the Y axis is the date. There is a red line that is rising steadily in an almost linear fashion from the year 2014 up to 2026.

Over the end-of-the-year break, GitHub users quietly gave Wagtail one of the best holiday gifts we could ask for. We now have over 20,000 stars on GitHub! We really appreciate the vote of confidence.

Our star count has been steadily growing since 2014 when Wagtail first launched. According to star-history.com, we achieved 5000 stars around 2018 and 10,000 stars only three years ago in 2023. The trend has been pretty linear.we achieved 5000 stars around 2018 and 10,000 stars only three years ago in 2023. The trend has been pretty linear.

Now, there's plenty of debate about whether GitHub starts really mean anything for an open source project. After all, there are many great and active projects without a lot of stars that are vital to the open source ecosystem. Popularity doesn't necessarily correlate with quality or usefulness. If it did, everything on the Internet would be powered by AI-generated cats doing TikTok dances.

Still, starring a project is an act of appreciation. It's a very small one. But the fact that over 20,000 people have taken a moment out of their day to show appreciation for our work and our software feels pretty awesome to us!

I'd also like to mention that those small acts of appreciation can add up to some real-world opportunities. Star count may be an imperfect measure of quality or popularity for an open source project, but it's still one of the factors that large organizations and funding bodies consider when they are looking at open source software to invest in. So your small act of appreciation for our project helps raise Wagtail's profile and could lead to some great opportunities for us.

One other way we're trying to raise Wagtail's profile right now is to get Wagtail nominated for the CMS Critic Awards. If you starred our project, please consider helping us by filling this form out to nominate Wagtail for Best Open Source CMS and any other category you think we should be nominated for. Just like the stars, your small act of appreciation could lead to more attention and opportunity for Wagtail.

Thank you SO MUCH to everyone who has given our project a star over the years! We feel the love, and we hope to give it back to you by continuing to deliver the excellence and dependability that you have come to expect from us. Wagtail would not be what it is today without our community, and we hope that you'll stick with us as we shoot for more stars.
